Is there a cost for ordering NIDA publications?

Print materials are available at no charge, including shipping, in very limited quantities. Due to budget cuts and shrinking inventory, limits are set to help ensure that NIDA can provide as many people as possible with printed materials.  

Is there a limit to how many publications I can order?

All publications are free of charge. However, there are limits on free shipping.
1. Who gets free shipping?

  • Everyone can order limited copies with free shipping. See the order limit next to each publication. (Submittal of multiple online orders in an attempt to get larger quantities will not be fulfilled.)
  • Educational institutions with a U.S. mailing address LIMIT: 30 copies
  • NDAFW event holders:  If you anticipate events larger than our order limits allow for, NIDA will consider your request for additional publications. Please email us at or call us at 1-877-643-2644.

2. Who must pay for shipping?
Anyone not described in b or c above who orders more than the limit for each publication. Please provide a FedEx or UPS shipping number by emailing us at or calling us at 1-877-643-2644. 
3. Are there exceptions?
Requestors can contact the NIDA staff to discuss possible exceptional circumstances. However, NIDA reserves the right to approve the number of select publications to be shipped for free. 

What if I need more copies of a publication?

You have options for printing or purchasing your own copies of NIDA publications.
I. Print individual copies (PDF, original size):
     1. On the order page, click "View this publication online at"
     2. Click the ”Download PDF” link.
     3. Print as you would any PDF, using the Print icon or your Web browser's Print option.
II. Have a printer in your area professionally print copies of NIDA print-ready publications.
To do this, you may need specially formatted print files (different from the PDF versions on our website). NIDA reserves the right to determine whether to provide these print files. To request print files, e-mail us at: These files should not be altered in any way prior to printing. Remember to include your organization's contact information and the name of the publication you want to print.

How long does a shipment take to arrive?

Our normal timeframe for delivery is between 2 and 4 weeks.

Do you ship materials outside of the United States and its territories?

We are able to ship anywhere within the United States and its territories; however, if you are requesting an international order, please furnish a FedEx or UPS account number to cover the shipping costs.

Is it okay to photocopy and print off NIDA publications from the website?

NIDA publications are available for your use and may be reproduced in their entirety without permission from NIDA.

How do I cite a NIDA publication if I refer to it in my writing?

Is there a way that I can track my order?

Your shipment should arrive between 2 and 4 weeks from the day you place the order. You can track your order’s status via your online DRUGPUBS account. If you have not received your order within the 4-week timeframe, please email or call the NIDA Research Dissemination Center ( or 1-877-643-2644). We will check on the status of your order.

How is shipping handled?

The NIDA warehouse packages all orders and sends them via the US Postal Service or FedEx.

What are the different ways I can place an order?

You may order online through the DRUGPUBS ordering site (, by phone (1-877-643-2644), by email (, by fax (1-240-645-0227), or by TDD (1-240-645-0228). Please include publication name(s), quantity, and your shipping address.

How do I find out when an out-of-stock publication will be back in stock?

We update our ordering site as soon as an out-of-stock publication is restocked. Please periodically check the DRUGPUBS ordering site for the publication you are looking for. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Some publications are very popular, and we try our best to keep up with the demand.  

Is it possible to expedite a shipment?

If you would like to receive your materials before our standard timeframe for delivery of 2 to 4 weeks, please provide us with your FedEx or UPS account number by either calling us at 1-877-643-2644, or emailing us at The cost of the expedited shipment rate will be charged to your shipping account number.
